How To Back Up, Copy, Or Move the Loftware Print Server To a New Server

Description

How to back up, copy, or move the Loftware Print Server to a new server

Solution

With any major change to a piece of software or hardware, it is recommended that you adequately back up any critical files. It is recommended that you perform the upgrade at the actual console vs. a remote connection. If using a USB key, you will be required to remove the key and replace it when the install is complete.
For either scenario, it is important to log on using the account that the LPS will normally run under.
If the upgrade will take place on the server currently running the LPS:

  1. Stop all Loftware programs on current server.
  2. To back up your configurations, copy printr32.ini, printr32.cfg, and user32.udb from the C:\Program Files\Loftware Labeling directory (or where the Loftware Print Server was installed on your system) to a backup location of your choice.

Note: Loftware has a Backup and Restore Utility. It requires a Loftware Print Server license. For full details on its configuration and use, see Loftware Print Server User's Guide.

  1. To backup or move the scan paths, export the registry sub-key [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WatchDogNT]
  2. Run the install. If the download is in a directory on the server, browse to the directory and run the LoftwarePrograms_xx.zip.
  3. In the .zip file run the LoftwarePrograms.exe. You can extract the files to a temp directory and run the .exe from that directory.
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts to configure the install. All of the configurations should move forward to the new version.
  5. If you are using a software key, contact the customer service department 603-766-3630 Ext 401 to obtain a new software key.
  6. After the install completes, start LPS (to ensure successful install).

Note: Any Windows printer drivers and spooler connections must be available in the user profile that will run the LPS.
Several issues must be considered when moving Loftware to a new server from a current server. It is important if you want to retain label files and any associated files (images, layouts, serial files, Data, and Dbases etc.) that these files be moved to the new server.

  1. Before any files can be moved to the new server, you need to set up a directory structure to match the existing install.
  2. To do this, create the directory C:\Program Files\Loftware Labeling (or if you are using a different drive, set the directory structure up to match that drive configuration, for example, D:\Program Files\Loftware Labeling).
  3. Copy the critical directories and contents to the new server: Labels, Layouts, Images, Data, Serial and Dbases directories into the corresponding directories on the new server.
  4. To move your printer configurations, copy printr32.ini, printr32.cfg and user32.udb from the C:\Program Files\Loftware Labeling directory to C:\Program Files\Loftware Labeling on the new server.
  5. To move the scan paths, export the registry sub-key [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WatchDogNT]
  6. Do not copy or move any of the .dll or .exe files from the root directory.
  7. Run the install. If the Download is in a directory on the server, browse to the directory and open, the LoftwarePrograms_xx.zip. In the .zip file, run the LoftwarePrograms.exe.If running the install from a CD, when the CD is placed in a CDROM drive, it should Auto Run. If not, you can browse to the CD and run setup.exe.
  8. Follow the on screen prompts to complete the install.
  9. Upon successful completion of the install, add the files copied from the original setup to the respective directory or registry location on the new server.
  10. Start LPS (ensure successful start).

Note: Any Windows printer drivers and spooler connections must be recreated on the new server while in the user profile that will run the LPS.
Any DSN used will need to be created on the new server, exactly matching the existing one in use.
After completing the above steps, when you are ready to switch to the new setup, move the license key to the new server.
If you are using a software key, contact the customer service department to obtain a new software key.
