Error 1305 Received When Installing LPS

Message

When installing the LPS (formerly WatchDog-NT), I receive the following DCOM error.

Error 1305

Explanation

This is a security issue that arises if the account the LPS is using does not have the proper access permissions.

Solution

The following steps detail how to grant the LPS account the needed permissions to install properly. Contact your system administrator before attempting this solution.

WinNT/2000

  1. Log on as the account that the LPS is to be using (and that you are installing it under).
  2. From the Windows NT desktop select Start / Run and type "dcomcnfg" in the Run box. The Distributed COM Configurator opens.
  3. Select the Default Security tab and in the "Default Access Permissions" section click "Edit Default..." .
  4. Click Add.. On the 'List Names From' line, choose the appropriate domain for the account the LPS is to use.
  5. Select Show Users, highlight the user the LPS will be using from the list of names.
  6. Click Add, OK, Apply, and OK again.
  7. Re-install the LPS while logged on as the user that you just granted default access permissions to.

Windows XP

  1. Start > Run, enter "dcomcnfg" in the Run Box.
  2. Go to Component Services > Computers > My Computer.
  3. Right-click My Computer, choose Properties, or in the Menu Bar, choose Action > Properties.
  4. Open the Default COM Security Tab, and in both the Access Permissions and Launch permissions sections, type in the Username for which you wish to add permissions.
  5. Press the Check Names button, and the network name and user is displayed.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Re-install the LPS while logged on as the user that you just granted default access permissions to.
