SystemRespond to a Promotion Result

When you perform object promotionClosed The transfer of a copy of objects specified in a promotion configuration from one Loftware Application Server to another., each new or changed object that has been promoted is checked into the destination server as a new minor version of the object, with the exception of objects that are of a type that does not support minor versions. Each object is promoted to the same location in the folder structure of the destination server that it occupied on the source server.

You can review the promoted objects, including performing appropriate testing. If the promotion resultClosed A record of the success or failure of a promotion attempt. In the System Management page, the Object Promotion Destination pane lists the promotion results for which this Loftware Application Server acted as the destination server. is satisfactory, you can publishClosed For transition to production, create a new version of the object, incrementing the major version number and setting the minor version number to zero. the promoted objects. If a review of the promotion result shows it to be unsatisfactory, you can roll back the promoted objects, re-publishing the last published version of each.

Note: If a promoted object was not previously published, it cannot be rolled back.

Important! Object promotion is designed for use with objects that occupy the same location in the folder structure on the destination server as on the source server. Although you can edit promoted objects on the destination server, it is strongly recommended that you do not move or rename any newly promoted objects until after you have published or rolled back. If you move or rename a promoted object prior to publishing or rolling back, you can no longer use the associated promotion result to publish or roll back any of the promoted objects.

To review the result of the promotion attempt and optionally publish or roll back the promoted objects on the destination server, perform the following steps.

Note: To perform this task, you must be signed in as the ClientAdmin or SuperAdmin user. For more information, see Controlling Access to System Settings.

  1. On the destination server, in System System Management, click Object Promotion Destination.
  2. In the Object Promotion Destination panel, click the promotion result for your promotion attempt.
  3. ClosedIf promotion was performed using direct access (Promote button)

ClosedIf promotion was performed using indirect access (Export to File button)

  4. Unless automatic publishing is turned on for the destination server so that all promoted objects have already been published, perform the following steps.
    1. Click the button to display any additional information available about the result of the promotion attempt.

Tip: If an object was successfully promoted, clicking may display a warning that Loftware Enterprise SP could not find the object by its fully-qualified name (FQN) for operation Backup. This notification indicates that the object did not exist on the destination server prior to the promotion attempt, but this is normal operation.

    2. In the Promoted objects and references table, review the list of objects promoted and their states.
    3. Open specific objects in Label Design Label Design or other pages of Loftware Enterprise SP for more detailed review as appropriate.

Tip: If any promoted objects do not appear to exist, in Access Control Access Control click Refresh.

When reviewing an object that links to a promoted layer or a layout, you may need to change the Version property of the area that points to the promoted object so that you can view the most recently checked in version rather than the last published version.

In Label Design Label Design, to incorporate the most recently checked in version of a layer or layout, select the field or area that links to the object. In the Properties pane, for Version select *.* to display the most recently checked in version.

      Example

If you open a label template that links to a layer object that you have just promoted, the label template displays the last published version of that layer object rather than the most recently checked in version. You can cause the label template to display the most recently checked in version of a layer object by clicking the associated layer area and, in the Properties pane, selecting *.* for the Version property.

    4. Perform any appropriate testing of the promoted objects.

For data services, the last published version is run by default. When testing a promoted data service, you may need to change the version of the data service that is run. To run another version, open the data service in Data Services Data Services, click Set Running Version, select the version to run, and click OK.

    5. After completing any review and testing, if you set any object to display the most recently checked in version of a layer or a layout, reset it to display the last published version.

In Label Design Label Design, to incorporate the last published version of a layer or layout, select the area that links to the object. In the Properties pane, for Version select *.0 to display the last published version.

For data services, no comparable action is needed because when a data service is published its active version is automatically reset to last published version.

    6. Perform one of the following actions.
      • If the promotion result is unsatisfactory, click Roll Back to republish the last published version of each object that existed prior to the promotion attempt.
      • If the promotion result is satisfactory, click Publish to publishClosed For transition to production, create a new version of the object, incrementing the major version number and setting the minor version number to zero. all new or changed objects that are included in the promotion result. If successful, in Access Control Access Control, the name of the promotion result is listed as the update description for the newly-published version.
      • If you have resorted to individually publishing or rolling back promoted objects by using Access Control Access Control or other pages in Loftware Enterprise SP, after you have published, rolled back, or deleted each promoted object, click Delete to remove the promotion result. Until you do so, you may be prevented from performing another promotion attempt using the same promotion configuration. Deleting the promotion result will not roll back the act of promotion or impact the associated objects. After deleting the promotion result, proceed to the final step in this procedure.
  5. Click the button to display any additional information available about the result of rolling back or publishing. If you rolled back, any objects that were not previously published cannot be rolled back. Those objects remain published but do not cause any error.
  6. Click Close to close the promotion result, or Delete if you want to remove it.

Deleting a promotion result does not roll back the act of promotion or affect the promotion configuration. However, deleting may cause the next promotion attempt for this promotion configuration to identify unchanged objects as changed.

Important! If you have not yet published or rolled back the promoted objects but intend to do so in the future, it is recommended that you do not delete the promotion result. If you delete it, you must manually select the promoted objects on the destination server to roll them back or publish them.

  7. If your destination environment is configured for high availability with distributed services, for each promoted device or data service you must manually start the device group service or data service on the Loftware Application Server on which you intend for it to run.

You have promoted objects from one Loftware Application Server to another and optionally rolled back or published the promoted objects on the destination server.
