DesignFill Groups Panel

The Fill Groups panel is displayed when you click View > Fill Groups when viewing a layout.

You can use this panel to create, configure, and delete fill groupsClosed A configuration that manages the order in which available labels are inserted into layout areas in a layout. A fill group specifies a start origin, fill direction, and match rule. Fill groups are part of a layout. that you can use to manage the order in which labels are inserted into the reference areas in a layout. Each reference area or reference grid is associated with one of the available fill groups.

When a print request is submitted, reference areas are filled with labels in order by fill group. Fill groups are processed in the order in which they are listed in the Fill Groups panel. You can change the position of a fill group in this order by dragging it.

During the processing of a print job, the fill group searches the layout beginning from the start origin and proceeding in the fill direction until it finds an available reference area that adheres to the match rule. Any reference areas assigned to another fill group are unavailable to this fill group. Also, reference areas smaller than the label to be placed are unavailable.

Delete the selected fill group.

Note: The Default fill group cannot be deleted. However, you can edit it. Also, you are not required to assign fill groups to it unless it is the only fill group that exists.

Edit

Edit Fill Group

Edit the properties of the selected fill group.

Property Controls

Property Description

Name

The name by which the fill group is identified within the layout.

Tip: When a reference area or reference grid is selected within the layout, this name is one of those in the drop-down list for Fill Group in the Properties pane.

Start Origin

When attempting to place a label in the layout at print time, where in the layout to begin scanning for available reference areas.

Values include Top Left, Top Right, Bottom Left, Bottom Right.

Fill Direction

When scanning the layout for available reference areas at print time, in which direction to proceed through the layout.

Values include Horizontal, Vertical.

Match Rule

At print time, the criteria to use to determine in which of the available reference areas to place a label.

The following values can be selected for a match rule.

Exact: At print time, use a label to fill a reference area only if the label and reference area have the same dimensions.

Best Fit: At print time, use a label to fill a reference area that has the same dimensions if one is available. If not, use the label to fill the first available reference area.

First Available: At print time, use the label to fill the first available reference area.

Note: Regardless of the match rule in effect, reference areas assigned to another fill group are unavailable to this fill group at print time. Also, reference areas smaller than the label to be placed are unavailable.
