Problem

Using the Loftware Print Server Configuration Utility to add a Scan Directory to a non-Windows platform generates error (M4849) Failed to create the notification for Scan followed by (M4850) The filesystem you are scanning does not support win32 File Change Notification Events.

In this example LPS Interactive was used to troubleshoot the issue with WatchDog log-level set to DEBUG. see the Logging section of the Online LPS User's guide

[2017/01/23 10:11:08.301] An alternative is to scan a local directory and have the legacy system drop files to the local path.

Explanation

The Loftware Print Server (LPS) failed to create the notification for Scan for the specified scan path as this is not supported. Subsequently, this will generate a (M4850) error: The file system you are scanning does not support win32 File Change Notification Events. File Change Notification events are Windows platform event notifications that are sent out for file changes in Windows folder systems.  Non-Windows systems do not raise these events and the notification for Scan is not sent out.

Solution

Polling must always be enabled for shared network drive scan paths. The LPS remains idle until the operating system notifies it that the contents of the scanned directory have changed. If you have polling disabled and find that the LPS is not processing your files, enable polling and set the polling interval to the millisecond interval that you wish to poll the directory; 2000 milliseconds (2 second) is the default.
